Identity Theft and Scam Warning Signs
Before you start your scholarship search, protect yourself by knowing how to identify scams. Think critically about each scholarship provider and only apply through reputable sites. Carefully review the terms and conditions of each opportunity before spending time on the applications and giving out personal information.
Here are some tips for avoiding scholarship scams:
- Never give out your SSN number or other highly sensitive personal information
- Never provide credit card or bank account information
- Never pay to apply for a scholarship or gain access to a scholarship database. Don’t believe in a money back guarantee or the promise of a scholarship. If it sounds too good to be true, it likely is.

Students who are awarded a scholarship are required to notify the Office of Student Financial Aid & University Scholarships so that these funds can be incorporated into their financial aid package. This could result in an adjustment to the student’s financial aid package. Reach out to your financial aid counselor for more information or to determine if a change to your financial aid award might be required.
Scholarship Enrollment Verification Forms
Some renewable (or multi-year) scholarship providers may ask that students verify their enrollment, GPA, and/or need annually.
