Transfer students are a vital part of Appalachian State University's student body. Scholarship opportunities are set aside exclusively for incoming transfer students who have shown previous academic success and involvement prior to their enrollment. All incoming transfer students, planning to enroll full-time for Fall semester in a main campus undergraduate degree program, and who complete their application for admission by February 15, and the Transfer Student Scholarship Application by March 1 will receive priority consideration for transfer student scholarship opportunities.
For scholarship purposes, Appalachian State University only considers students that plan on beginning their time at App in the fall semester with a minimum of 24 transferable credit hours. Students that have completed at least 12 credit hours may apply for the fall semester as early as the previous August. Students that will not have transferable credits until the end of the fall semester must wait until December to apply for the next fall semester. The Appalachian Excellence Scholarship (AES) for Transfer Students
The Appalachian Excellence Scholarship for Transfer Students currently supports approximately 40 new transfer students each Fall who demonstrate high merit and the ability to succeed.
- Annual $1,000 Scholarship
- Awarded $500 per semester for up to 2 consecutive semesters (1 year)
- Based on information provided with the application for admission by the February 15 deadline and the Transfer Student Scholarship Application submitted by March 1
- Subject to available funding
Additional Scholarship Opportunities for Transfer Students
In addition to the AES, Appalachian State University provides approximately 10 merit and need-based scholarship opportunities to new transfer students who complete their application for Fall admission on or before February 15 and the Fall 2020 Transfer Student Scholarship Application by 11:59 P.M. eastern time on March 1. Transfer students wishing to be considered for need-based scholarships must additionally file the FAFSA by February 15.

Herbert W. Wey Scholarship for Phi Theta Kappans
The Dr. Herbert W. Wey Scholarship is for members of Phi Theta Kappa who transfer to Appalachian for the fall semester beginning their junior year. This scholarship is non-renewable with a priority consideration going to students from North Carolina and South Carolina. To be considered for the Herbert W. Wey Scholarship, students must complete their application for admission by February 15th and the Transfer Student Scholarship Application by March 1.
The Josephus Daniels Scholarship
The Josephus Daniels Scholarship was established to support academically motivated transfer students from regional community colleges who have demonstrated financial need and plan to enroll as a full-time student beginning the fall semester. Students being considered for this scholarship should complete the application for admission by February 15 and complete the application for Transfer Student Scholarship Application by March 1. This scholarship is not renewable.
The Margaret I. McIntyre Endowed Scholarship
The Margaret I. McIntyre Endowed Scholarship was established to support sophomores and/or transfer students who demonstrate financial need. Students being considered for this scholarship should complete the application for admission by February 15 and the Transfer Student Scholarship Application by March 1.
Staff Senate awards scholarships to permanent staff members and dependents. Awards are based primarily on academic performance and financial need. A scholarship recipient must have been accepted as a student at an institution of higher education for the academic year for which they are applying.
Geology Transfer Student Award
The Geology Transfer Student Award was established to recognize and reward the successful transition of outstanding geology transfer students to Appalachian State University. Application and awards are made through the College of Arts & Sciences.
The Palmer Math Transfer Scholarship
The Palmer Math Transfer Fund is intended to recognize a promising entering NC transfer student majoring in the department of mathematical sciences at Appalachian. Candidates for the scholarship are restricted to students from an NC Community College. First consideration will go to qualified students who complete their application for admission by February 15 and the Transfer Student Scholarship Application by March 1.
